Did Bio-Foods “Reverse Engineer” Nutritional Science? 

 

Starting in the 1920's, since foods have to be taken apart to be chemically defined, vitamin researchers dismantled the complex structures of nature.  They isolated vitamins away from the other constituents of food in order to define and publish their chemical structures, which then allowed others to synthesize them in commercial quantities.

 

At first, industry pioneers sold extracts of natural foods like alfalfa and rose hips, touting the complex foods contained (somewhat like today's green foods).  Those extracts probably contained nutrient forms little changed from their original state.  Later, over time, competition forced some vitamin companies to substitute more and more of their food with more and more synthesized vitamins in order to claim greater potencies at more competitive prices.

 

Some people, including the founders of Bio-Foods feared the food-like state that Nature meant vitamins to be in, with the vital interaction and synergism with the other food constituents our industry always believed natural whole foods provide, might be in danger of disappearing as supplements from vitamin section shelves.

   

So in 1991 the founders of Bio-Foods, Ltd. decided to go against the trend of science to take foods apart and devised a way to put the constituents back together into a whole food like form.  While chemists might be able to take small steps such as reacting a nutrient with an amino acid or a peptide, no human can duplicate Nature.  So it was decided to use Nature itself, and the rest of our story can be read elsewhere on this site.

 

Fortunately, in today’s environment of ever increasing discoveries of valuable phytonutrients and synergistic functionalities of food constituents, the importance of a complex whole food vs isolated components is becoming profoundly appreciated, making whole food vitamin supplements marketable once again.
